bagels-and-coffee asked: I'm thinking about getting dreads and I need help with knowing how to start without screwing it up. I've currently got a pixie cut so I'm waiting til the end of the year (maybe longer) to get them. It worries me because everyone I talk to -even my bosses- say I'll never get a job or get into Hotel Management College with them :(
Hey there! Well there are different methods that you can use to start your dreadlocks, for straight hair there is the backcombing technique, and for curlier thicker hair there is the comb coil method. If you truly want dreadlocks, I don’t think you should comprise your decision of getting them based on what others say. Most people are still generally uninformed about dreadlocks, and automatically associate them with a stereotypical point of view. Dreadlocks can be clean and beautiful. When I first got my dreadlocks I was working at a job where my boss had no issue with them, although I am aware that there may be bosses who are not as flexible. Working with dreadlocks within a particular field, may have its boundaries. I am currently studying and pursuing a career within the creative/artistic field, thus there is more flexibility regarding individuality. However, I do believe that dreadlocks can be just as professional as regular hair styles when they are kept well and are maintained. I think one major aspect that people forget about dreadlocks is that it is still HUMAN HAIR meaning it can be pinned back, styled, put in a ponytail, dyed, curled, put in a bun, wavy, tidy, clean and so on. Dreadlocks are just as versatile as normal or even more so. In the end it is your decision, and you should do what’s best for you and your professional career :).
