Twisting vs Interlocking?
So yesterday, instead of doing my usual retwist after I have washed my locs, I decided to do a little research regarding interlock. For those of you of who do not know the what interlocking is, it is a method which basically consists of weaving your dread into the new growth of hair, creating a form of knots that allows your new growth to be immediately locked in place.
After, watching a few youtube videos,( I used this video as reference http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gLWc8LkYt_s) I really wanted to give it a try, and interlocked my dreads. From what I have gathered from the process, this method comes with both it’s pros and cons. The good side of it is that once you have interlocked your dreads you can go from wash to wash without having your roots unravel from retwists. Not only that, but you gain the security of your locks being immediately locked in.
However, I have learned that it may cause some thinning to the root, if over done, but then again the same thing can be said with the over retwisting of your roots. I have also noticed a texture difference between the two methods. For example, although the transition is not visible noticeable between both methods, the parts of my dreads that have formed through retwisting - free forming have an overall softer feel.
So, what I have decided to do , is that since I have almost reached m 1 year mark since I have gotten my dreads, after February 5th, 2012, I want to try to interlock my hair once a month for a whole year.
Which method do you use to maintain your locks? Whether it be through Retwisting, interlocking, or free form? leave a comment below.
